Lean Body Mass Calculator

Use our free lean body mass calculator to find your LBM, your FFMI, and your daily protein target. If you know your body fat percentage, you get the direct calculation. If not, the calculator averages three medical formulas.

What Is Lean Body Mass?

Lean body mass, or LBM, is everything in your body that is not storage fat: muscle, bone, water, organs, and essential fat. It drives your metabolism, sets your protein needs, and decides how muscular you look. Two people can weigh the same and look completely different, because one carries more lean mass and less fat.

Fat-free mass, or FFM, excludes all fat. Lean body mass includes essential fat, the small amount your body needs to function. The difference is roughly 2-3% in men and 5-12% in women, and it rarely changes what you do. For training and nutrition decisions, treat the two numbers the same way.

How This Lean Body Mass Calculator Works

If you know your body fat percentage, this lean body mass calculator uses the direct route: LBM = weight x (1 – body fat %). If you do not know it, the calculator averages three medical formulas from your height and weight, and shows all three so you can see how they compare.

FormulaMenWomenYear
Boer0.407W + 0.267H – 19.20.252W + 0.473H – 48.31984
Hume0.32810W + 0.33929H – 29.53360.29569W + 0.41813H – 43.29331966
James1.1W – 128*(W/H)^21.07W – 148*(W/H)^21976

The formulas were fitted to different study populations, so they rarely agree exactly. For typical adults they agree within about 2 kg, and the average smooths the difference. The James formula can behave erratically at very high body weight, because its squared term dominates. W is weight in kg and H is height in cm.

What Is FFMI?

FFMI, or fat-free mass index, is your lean body mass divided by your height squared: FFMI = LBM / height^2, with height in meters. It is like BMI, but it measures muscularity instead of total weight. Two people with the same BMI can have very different FFMIs, because one carries more muscle and less fat.

Normalized FFMI adjusts the number to a standard height of 1.8 m, so taller and shorter lifters can be compared fairly. Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.3 x (1.8 – height in meters). This lean body mass calculator shows both numbers.

An FFMI above 25 is rare for drug-free lifters, so double-check your measurements before you conclude you are past the ceiling. The best known reference is Kouri et al. (1995), the study that found nonusers’ normalized FFMI capped at 25.0.

Worked Example

Here is a worked example using the default values in this lean body mass calculator. A 30-year-old man is 175 cm tall and weighs 75 kg, and he does not know his body fat percentage.

The three formulas give Boer 58.1 kg, Hume 54.4 kg, and James 59.0 kg, for an average lean body mass of 57.2 kg. That leaves an implied fat mass of 17.8 kg, or 23.8% body fat. His FFMI is 18.7, his normalized FFMI is 19.0, and his band is Average. His protein target is 91-126 g per day.

Common Lean Body Mass Calculator Problems (And How to Fix Them)

Most confusing results from a lean body mass calculator come from the estimates themselves, not from a mistake in your inputs. Here are the five problems we see most often, and how to fix each one.

  1. The three formulas disagree. This is normal. For typical adults they agree within about 2 kg, and the average smooths the difference. If you know your body fat %, the direct calculation beats all three.
  2. FFMI says enhanced but I am natural. The formulas estimate, they do not measure. A few kg of error moves FFMI a full point, so verify with a body fat measurement. 25 is a soft ceiling, not a test.
  3. Lean mass dropped but I did not lose muscle. Water and glycogen swings move estimates by kilograms. Measure at the same time under the same conditions, and trust the trend over weeks.
  4. The calculator says more lean mass than seems possible. At very high body weight the James formula can inflate the number. Check whether Boer and Hume agree, and use a body fat measurement.
  5. The protein target seems high. It is based on lean mass, the correct base. 1.6-2.2 g/kg is for people training for muscle, and sedentary people need less.

What To Do With Your Result

Start with the calorie calculator to set your daily intake, then use the protein intake calculator to set your daily protein target. The body fat percentage calculator will help you track whether the weight you change is fat or muscle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lean body mass?

Everything in your body that is not storage fat: muscle, bone, water, organs, and essential fat. It drives your metabolism and your protein needs.

What is the difference between lean body mass and fat-free mass?

Fat-free mass excludes all fat. Lean body mass includes essential fat. The difference is roughly 2-3% in men and 5-12% in women, and it rarely changes what you do.

How is lean body mass calculated?

If you know your body fat percentage: weight x (1 – body fat %). Otherwise this calculator averages the Boer, Hume, and James formulas from your height and weight.

What is a good FFMI?

For men: 18-20 average, 20-22 above average, 22-25 athletic. For women the bands run about 3 points lower. Above 25 is rare for drug-free lifters.

How much protein should I eat per kg of lean body mass?

1.6-2.2 g per kg of LBM per day if you train for muscle. Sedentary people need less.

Can I increase my lean body mass?

Yes, with strength training, a slight calorie surplus, and enough protein. The calculator’s protein target tells you the daily number.

Why do the three formulas give different numbers?

They were fitted to different study populations. For typical adults they agree within about 2 kg. The average smooths the difference.

Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass?

No. Lean body mass includes muscle plus bone, water, and organs. Muscle is the largest part of it, but not all of it.

How accurate is a lean body mass calculator?

It is an estimate. The direct route with a measured body fat % is the most accurate. Formula estimates can be off by a few kilograms, so track the trend rather than one reading.
