💡 Personalized Health Tips
Medical Disclaimer: BMI is a population-level screening tool, not a clinical diagnosis. It does not measure body fat directly and may be inaccurate for athletes, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and children. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making health decisions based on this result.
What Is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool that estimates whether your weight falls in a healthy range for your height. It was devised in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet and later adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the international standard for classifying adult weight status.
One important caveat: BMI estimates weight status. It does not measure body fat directly. Two people with the same BMI can have very different body compositions. Think of it as a first check, not a diagnosis (more on its limits below).
How BMI Is Calculated
The formula is simple:
BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
- Square the height: 1.75 × 1.75 = 3.0625
- Divide the weight by that number: 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.86
- BMI is about 22.9, which is inside the healthy range.
Using pounds and inches? BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². The calculator above handles both systems automatically. Just enter your numbers.
Understanding Your BMI Category
The WHO defines four adult categories from large population studies linking BMI ranges to health risk: Underweight (below 18.5), Healthy weight (18.5 to 24.9), Overweight (25 to 29.9), and Obese (30 and above). Your result above is mapped against exactly these bands, which you can see in the table.
Note: if you used South Asian mode, the calculator applies the lower Asia-Pacific cutoffs described below.
What Is BMI Prime?
BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25 (the top of the healthy range). It turns your result into an easy ratio:
- Below 0.74: underweight zone
- 0.74 to 1.0: healthy zone
- Above 1.0: over the healthy ceiling (1.2 means 20% above it)
Many people find Prime more intuitive than the raw number. A reading of 0.9 instantly means comfortably healthy.
BMI Cutoffs for South Asians
Research shows metabolic risk (type 2 diabetes, heart disease) rises at lower BMIs in South Asian populations. The WHO Asia-Pacific guidance therefore uses tighter cutoffs: overweight from 23 and obese from 25 (instead of 25 and 30). That is why this calculator includes a South Asian mode. If you are of South Asian ethnicity, switch it on for a more accurate classification.
Limitations of BMI (Read This Before Acting)
BMI is a population screening tool, not a personal diagnosis. It can mislead for: athletes and muscular builds (muscle is denser than fat, so BMI can read “overweight” on a lean, muscular person); older adults (age-related muscle loss can mask excess fat); pregnancy (weight gain is expected and healthy, so BMI cutoffs don’t apply); children and teens (use age-and-sex BMI percentiles, not adult cutoffs); and fat distribution (BMI can’t tell higher-risk belly fat from fat elsewhere). If any of these describe you, treat your result as a rough signal and talk to a healthcare professional, as our disclaimer below notes.
BMI vs Body Fat Percentage
BMI guesses; body fat percentage measures. Methods like the U.S. Navy tape-measure method, skinfold calipers, or DEXA scans estimate actual fat mass. A rugby player and an office worker can share a BMI of 27 with completely different health profiles. Use BMI for quick screening and trends; use body fat percentage when you want precision.
How to Move Your BMI Into the Healthy Range
Healthy, sustainable change beats crash dieting.
Eat slightly less than you burn (a daily deficit of about 500 kcal typically means around 0.5 kg per week). Prioritize protein and strength training to preserve muscle while you lose fat. Move daily: walking, especially after meals, adds up fast. Drink enough water, because thirst often masquerades as hunger. Check your needs with our Daily Water Intake Calculator. Sleep 7 to 9 hours, since short sleep disrupts hunger hormones. Recheck monthly. Trends matter more than any single reading.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, 18.5 to 24.9 according to the WHO. If you are South Asian, aim for 18.5 to 22.9 per Asia-Pacific guidance.
How do I calculate my BMI manually?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. Example: 70 kg ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9.
Is BMI accurate?
As a screening tool, yes. It correlates well with health risk across populations. For individuals it is approximate, because it cannot distinguish muscle from fat. See the limitations section above.
Is BMI different for men and women?
The formula and cutoffs are the same, but men and women typically carry different muscle-to-fat proportions at the same BMI, so interpretation can differ slightly.
What BMI should athletes aim for?
Athletes often land in the “overweight” range due to muscle mass. Body fat percentage is a better gauge for them.
What does BMI Prime mean?
Your BMI divided by 25. A Prime of 1.0 sits exactly at the top of the healthy range; below 1.0 is healthy, above means over.
Why are South Asian cutoffs lower?
Studies show South Asians develop metabolic conditions like diabetes at lower BMIs, so the WHO Asia-Pacific thresholds (23 for overweight, 25 for obese) catch risk earlier.
Can children use this BMI calculator?
Not with adult cutoffs. Children need age-and-sex-specific BMI percentiles, so this tool is designed for adults.
How often should I check my BMI?
Once a month is plenty. Track the trend over time rather than reacting to a single number.
Does muscle mass affect BMI?
Yes. Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people can have a high BMI with low body fat. Pair BMI with a waist measurement or body fat estimate for the full picture.
